10 Steps to Staying Calm

Times of turbulence can cause distress, anxiety, and fear… Are you taking care of You?

It is important to understand what happens within ourselves will affect those around us as well as the energy we put out into the world. We are all energy and our vibration at which we tend to hover in has a ripple effect.

Every person is made up differently, so how we see things; perceptions, feel things, and act on things may be very different from one another. This is why we need to study and understand ourselves on a deeper level to then be able to understand and embrace others in the same way without judgment, hypercriticism, resentment, or defensiveness.

When we bring our attention inward and ask ourselves questions like “ Where is this turbulence coming from? Within myself? or from something else?” is a good place to initiate. Then we can take a step further and ask, “ Is what I feel or think absolutely true? How am I reacting to this feeling or thought? And if I let this feeling or thought go for a just a moment how would I feel then?

From there we set ourselves up for success in planting the seed for inner growth and opportunities to create the person we want to be as well as the type of life we want to live. Shifting our process or routine of how we do things is the second step. This does not mean you have to make major changes in what you are comfortable with, it means trying one thing a little differently than you did it before or maybe something completely new that shakes things up for you in a very positive way!

Bring your attention to how it feels. First, just say it. Speak it out loud, and then take one little step towards doing it. I remember once talking with one of my yoga teachers who said she wanted to start running, something she had never done but felt she needed to get some cardiovascular exercise in her routine. So the first day she put on her running shoes and laced them up and never left her house. the next day she put on her running shoes, laced them up and step outside to go get the mail. The third day she put on her shoes again, laced them up, and went for a walk, and on the fourth day she did the same sequence but instead of just a walk she tried jogging… And from there a new routine had started.

That is just one example. But that process can be implemented into anything you want to do. Now it is time for you! While you might have a bit more time on your hands right now, or just needing something else to focus on for a bit I have created below a list of tips that just might pique your interest! you never know where it will lead you…

  1. First thing in the morning before you leave your bed, think of one word that you want to role with for the day and take 10 breaths, on the inhale saying the word silently to yourself then exhale and imagine it filling the space all around you as if you were proclaiming it to the world!

  2. Start your day with a cup of warm or hot water with lemon. If you are already doing this then try a different recipe from classic Ayurveda practices: use lemon or lime, a slice of ginger root, honey and a pinch of salt. (you can omit any of those)This is a great way to cleanse your gut and liver to take on a day of digesting!

  3. Move your body! Listen to what your body is calling for that day. Don’t push yourself to do something your body doesn’t want to do, instead enjoy something that feels good and you like doing. It is hard to build a steady routine of anyting if it hurts or you don’t like it!

  4. Enjoy a piece of nature… This could be a walk in the woods, a path, a beach, by a river or lake. You could sit and close your eyes and take in all the magical sounds around you. Listen to the message that nature is trying to get across. You might just have a Ah-ha moment!

  5. Treat yourself to a self massage (Abyhanga) using warm sesame, sunflower, almond, coconut, or any other base oil you like. Add a essential oil of choice and lather your entire body with it. Then take a warm bath or shower and let it penetrate in. This is very calming for your nervous system, immune building, detoxing and rejuvenating all at the same time!

  6. Set your room up for restorative sleep. Clear the clutter, place a diffuser by your bedside with your favorite essential oils, a very dim salt lamp, calming music, light blocking drapes, and no electronics. This is a place of rest and serenity for the best nights sleep! Quality sleep is essential for our whole health and well-being.

  7. Join a community group that feeds your soul. Getting to know and spending time with like minded people is not only healthy for your body and mind, but also is scientifcally proven to help you live a longer and happier life!

  8. Let in love! You maybe a giver or a receiver. We are are usually one or the other. If you are a giver, allow yourself the gift of receiving. If you are a receiver practice giving. In serving others, a kind word, just being a listener instead of talker, donating time or money to a good cause.

  9. Practice being you in your best form. Your highest divine form. Your beautiful pure soul…

  10. One last tip… This is your creative canvas, to add something that comes to mind for you right now. That is turning up the energy in your source of passion, abundance, joy and deeper connection with yourself!
